Dusting off the Shelf Read-A-Thon

I don’t usually participate in read-a-thons, mainly because I’m never successful with them, but today I saw a fellow blogger, Emily, mention that she was hosting a two-week-long read-a-thon, starting from August 1st – August 15th, and I got really excited!

So today we’ll be talking about the Dusting off the Shelf Read-A-Thon!

Dusting off the ShelfClick here to see Emily’s post telling you the rules and how to sign up (everything is really simple), and click here to see the challenges and her TBR!

Read-A-Thon Challenges:

  • Read a book set in the past.
  • Read a classic.
  • Read a book written before 2010.
  • Read at least 100 pages a day.
  • Read a book that’s been neglected by you for a shameful amount of time.

So those are the challenges!  Time for…

My Read-A-Thon Picks:

Read a book set in the past — The book I’ve chosen for this is The Diviners by Libba Bray.  It’s been on my shelves since I believe December… do I smell neglect?

Read a classic — My choice for this is 1984 by George Orwell.  I actually started this a few days ago before I knew about the read-a-thon, but I’m only six pages in, so let’s just let that pass ;D

Read a book written before 2010 — For this challenge, I’ve chosen The Host by Stephenie Meyer, published in 2008.  Well, look who’s striving high.  Already two humongous books on my list… *rubs temples* They have been on my shelves for a while, though.  And I don’t see myself picking them up anytime soon, as I have a bunch of other books to read.  Le sigh.  Problems of a reader.

I was actually considering my current read for this challenge, Kissed by an Angel, which was published in 1995… yeah, I think it qualifies.  But I’m already 40 pages in, so I’ll just read that for a few more days.  Hopefully I’ll finish it before the read-a-thon begins!

Read at least 100 pages a day — This one shouldn’t be hard, since these days my daily count is around 100 pages every day.

Read a book that’s been neglected by you for a long time — I’m going with Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier, which I’ve heard so, so many great things about.  It’s also been on my shelf for a very long time, so yay!  I’ve heard it’s about time travel, which, if you didn’t know, I LOVE.  I’m really excited to read these!

Now, this is only four books to read in two weeks, which I’d like to think I can tackle.  But, two of those books are pretty thick (which is probably why I’ve been neglecting them… and… well, hype), so I don’t know.  But I don’t want to stress over this and throw myself into another slump (though if I do, I’ll have a Rachel Hawkins book waiting for me, and her books are the best, especially for digging yourself out of that hole reading slumps tend to throw you in), so I’m just going to take it slow.  It’s definitely going to be fun, though!!!

I’ll be doing daily progress updates as well, so here’s what those will look like:

  1. Thanks so much for joining!!! 😀 I’m hoping to read The Diviners as well. And 1984 is an amazing classic! The Host is another favorite of mine. Stephanie Meyer really won me over, especially since, although I never read Twilight, I could tell it wasn’t my thing.

    1. Of course! I can’t wait for this read-a-thon to begin! Yeah, The Diviners has been on my TBR for quite some time now, and when I saw the challenge to read a book based in the past, it popped into my head immediately 😀 I’m also slightly nervous to read a Stephenie Meyer book that is outside her vampire world, haha.

  2. OH MY GOD THE DIVINERS. YOU WILL LOVE IT, I PROMISE. *flails excitedly* 😀 I haven’t read The Host yet (even though I loved, loved, loved Twilight), but I’m hoping to read it in the near future… can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!

      1. In that case: MISSION SUCCESSFUL. 😉

Yessss! I know you can do it! 😀 (Seriously, though, you won’t be able to put The Diviners down – I know I couldn’t. It was finals week, too, so that made for an… interesting result… :P)

  3. This sounds like a lot of fun and something that I really need to do. I have so many unread books that have been on my shelf for way too long, and this will help me get to some books I haven’t looked at in years. Thanks for letting me know about this readathon!
